Yes, We Did! Tredyffrin Backs Obama.
Thank you for your support and your good citizenship in the 2008 voting. Barack Obama's race energized our community. We had an 81% turnout in Tredyffrin voting. Many township residents showed their commitment by patiently standing through long lines at the polls. It was an historic day for all, coming to a close with Senator Obama's very moving acceptance speech in Chicago. Here are some notes on our local experience:
Tredyffrin backs Barack Obama in big margin.
- Wins 56% of township vote.
- Above his Chester County margin of 54%, and slightly above Pennsylvania statewide margin.
- Although John Kerry won presidential voting in Tredyffrin in 2004, his margin was narrow--120 votes.
- Obama won in 15 of township's 17 precincts. (Kerry carried 9 precincts.)
Paoli's Paul Drucker, a Democrat, elected to 157th District of PA House of Representatives.
- District-wide, Drucker won by 600 votes, a 2% margin of victory.
- Despite the Republican edge in township voter registration, Paul ran well in Tredyffrin, winning in 6 of the precincts.
- In Tredyffrin, stayed within 600 votes of Republican opponent, Guy Ciarrocchi.
- In the Phoenixville precincts, Paul Drucker won over 60% of that vote, and also carried the legislative district's Montgomery County precincts.
- Paul is replacing retiring Carole Rubley, a long-time township resident. Carole served 8 terms, and her faithful work is very appreciated.
- Elected in 2005, Paul Drucker was the first Democrat to serve on the Tredyffrin Board of Supervisors. Now making further history with election in the 157th legislative district.
Senator Andy Dinniman re-elected to PA Senate in our 19th Senatorial District.
- Senator Dinniman was first elected in a special election in May 2006.
- Andy won with 56% of that vote, and became the first Democrat to represent Chester County since 1890.
- This November, Senator Dinniman carried 58% of the vote and won by 23,000 votes
Republican Jim Gerlach continues as our U.S. Congressperson.
- Democrat Bob Roggio ran a solid race against the 3-term incumbent Gerlach.
- Roggio gathered 48% of the district vote.
- However, this U.S. House race was not as tight as the razor-thin margins in each of the two Gerlach races against previous opponent Lois Murphy.
Democratic registration in Tredyffrin rises dramatically.
- Since the 2006 election, township voter registration of Democrats has increased almost 9 percentage points.
- Going from 30% in 2006 to almost 39% for the 2008 election.
- We have gained over 2000 Democrats!
- Anguished by G.W. Bush and excited by Barack Obama, many Republicans and Independents switched to D registration.
- Further, Senator Obama performed well in attracting crossover votes, as he carried 56% of the vote in our township, with only a 39% Democratic representation.
Thank you again for making history.
