A team of students from Conestoga High School earned a spot in the finals of an international math modeling competition after completing a challenging 14-hour problem-solving session.

The students participated in the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, an online competition where teams use mathematics and statistics to analyze real-world issues. This year’s challenge focused on predicting the growth of e-bike use and evaluating its potential impact on society.

Through a combination of advanced math skills and creative problem-solving, the Conestoga team’s submission was selected as one of the top solutions in the competition.

“One of the greatest rewards as a teacher is to see your students find a passion and pursue it beyond the four walls of the classroom,” said Conestoga teacher and team coach Allison Youndt. “This team has a passion for mathematics and statistics, not just for the sake of doing the math, but to apply it to the world around them.”

Youndt praised the students for combining their knowledge of mathematical modeling with new approaches and ideas.

“Going beyond what is known and comfortable is the signature of a lifelong learner,” she said. “This team is comprised of five lifelong learners, and participating in the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge is one step in their journey.”
