PA Supreme Court Upholds No-Excuse Mail Voting Law

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that the state law allowing voters to cast ballots by mail without providing a reason is constitutional.

In a 5–2 decision, the court upheld Act 77, the law that modernized Pennsylvania’s election code and expanded access to mail-in voting for eligible voters across the Commonwealth.

The ruling reversed a lower court decision and confirmed that Pennsylvania voters may continue to vote by mail in future elections.

Statement from Attorney General Josh Shapiro

“After years of attacks on our election system, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court stated loud and clear that Act 77, which modernized our election code, is constitutional,” Shapiro said.

Mail-in voting allows voters to cast their ballots from home while maintaining strong security protections within Pennsylvania’s election system.
